What is Partial Transportation? What are the advantages?
The importance of logistics cannot be ignored in the face of increasing consumption rates in today's developing world. Logistics is the name given to the supply of resources such as transportation and transportation, products, people and services, where they are needed and at the desired time.
In today’s rapidly developing world, the importance of logistics cannot be ignored in the face of increasing consumption rates. Logistics, also known as transportation and shipping, refers to the process of delivering resources such as products, people, and services to the required place at the desired time. When a customer’s cargo does not fill a full container or transport vehicle, partial transportation comes into play. The term “partial” (parsiyel), meaning incomplete or a part of a whole, refers in the transportation sector to a method aimed at reducing costs. In English, it is defined as LCL, or “Less than Container Load.” Partial cargo transportation is the practice of filling the unused space of a vehicle or container with the cargo of other customers when it cannot be fully loaded.Due to its geographical location, partial transportation is widely preferred in both domestic and international logistics in our country. Parsiyel transportation is highly important for the logistics sector and offers various significant advantages to both customers and logistics companies.
Advantages of Partial (LCL) Transportation
Partial transportation is a widely preferred method for both domestic and international deliveries, shaped around the principles of cost savings, reliability, and convenience. For these reasons, partial cargo transportation offers many advantages and can be listed as follows:Since it carries the loads of multiple customers with a pricing system based on cargo volume, it provides cost savings. It is a reliable method.
Cargo tracking and control are easy for both senders and receivers.
It is accessible 24/7.
Customers are informed throughout the transportation process.
In partial transportation, empty spaces within the vehicle do not increase the cost; payment is made only for the volume occupied by the cargo.
By transporting goods from multiple customers on the same route together, both time and cost savings are achieved.
It provides labor savings.
It offers integrated transportation services with other modes such as road, sea, air, and rail transport.
It reduces waiting times.
Various storage services are offered according to customer and recipient demands regarding delivery times.
Loading can be done from warehouses or directly from doors (door-to-door service).
Types of Partial Transportation
The transportation mode used in partial shipping is selected according to the geographical characteristics of the delivery destination. The types of partial transportation are as follows:Sea transport: The most commonly used method for international freight transport. Goods are carried by ships or containers.Road transport: Used for both domestic and international transportation. Freight is generally carried by trucks, and in some cases by vans or lorries.
Air transport: Cargo is transported via freight aircraft.
Rail transport: This method involves renting part of a train wagon but is less preferred due to cost.
How Partial Cargo is Calculated
In order to place goods efficiently during partial transportation, detailed load calculations must be made. So how is cargo calculated in this cost-efficient transport method? The goal is to determine how much a partial shipment will cost to transport. The calculation method varies depending on the transport type. For air transport, weight is the primary factor. For sea and road transport, volume (cubic meters) is used.First, volume is calculated and then multiplied by 1000 m³. The formula is:(Length × Width × Height × Number of Units)In simpler terms: Length × Width × Height × Quantity. In road transport, 1 m³ is considered 333 kg; in sea transport, 1 m³ is 1000 kg; and in air transport, 1 m³ is 167 kg.Key Points of Partial Transportation
In partial cargo transportation, where multiple shipments are loaded onto the same vehicle, the loading process must follow the LIFO (Last In, First Out) method. In this method, the last loaded cargo is unloaded first, and careful planning is essential. To prevent damage, heavy loads should be placed at the bottom and lighter ones on top.Proper labeling of cargo is very important to avoid confusion.
